Deciding to become a realtor can be exciting! Envisioning those new challenges, the amazing commission, putting your salesmanship and people skills to work – all of it can lead to a very fulfilling, and potentially long-lasting, career. But, where to start? The first thing you need is a real estate license. Here are some simple tips to help you determine what to get done prior to applying.
What to Do Before Applying for a Real Estate License
While every state has different requirements and prerequisites for becoming a real estate agent, it’s likely that you must be at least 18 years old when applying for your license.
Learn your housing market.
Before you become a full-fledged realtor, it’s considered a good practice to learn about your area. Drive the streets, read up on local news, research up-and-coming areas, stay current on the health of the housing market. The more you know, the better you’ll do when buying and selling homes in your locale.
Most states require real estate courses and passing an exam in order to apply for your license. It all depends on your jurisdiction, so make sure you are taking the right accredited courses and taking the right exams for your area.
Build your network.
Any successful realtor will tell you that their business thrives off of referrals. It’s a good idea to start building a solid base of contacts even before you get your license. Staying top-of-mind is key to jumpstarting your career as a realtor.
Find a mentor.
By taking classes and earning your license, you’ll learn a lot about the ins and outs of real estate. However, there’s a lot that can’t be learned from reading a book. Find a mentor who’s been successful in real estate and find out why. By getting to know how they do business, you’ll be able to form your own method – one that, hopefully, is just as successful.
There’s a lot that goes into starting a new phase in life, and becoming a realtor is no exception. However, by using these tips to guide your road into real estate, you’re sure to start off on the right foot. We wish you the best of luck in your new career!
